Mark Rachesky graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Molecular Aspects of Cancer. He continued his education at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he received his M.D., and at the Stanford University School of Busines, where he received his M.B.A.

From 1987 to 1990, Dr. Rachesky worked for an affiliate of the Robert M. Bass Group. From 1990 to June 1996, Dr. Rachesky worked for Carl C. Icahn at Icahn Holding Corporation, first as a senior investment officer, and later as managing Director of Icahn Holding Corporation and acting chief investment adviser. In 1996, Dr. Rachesky founded MHR Fund Management LLC, of which he is the president.

Dr. Rachesky serves on the board for several companies including Loral Space and Communications Inc., of which he is the chairman of the board of directors. Dr. Rachesky is also the chairman of the board of directors for Leap Wireless International. He is a member of the board of directors for Emisphere Technologies, Inc., Neose Technologies, Inc., and Nations Health, Inc. Rachesky has previously served on the board of directors for Neose Technologies, Inc., and NovaDel Pharma, Inc.

In 2008, MHR and the board of directors for Loral Space and Communications, Inc. wre sued by the shareholders for breaches of fiduciary duties related to financing by MHR. During the time of the investigation, Dr. Rachesky was president of MHR Fund Management LLC, and the chairman for the Board of Directors of Loral Space and Communications, Inc.
