Michael Targoff – Loral Space and Communications
Michael Targoff graduated from Brown University in 1966 with a B.A. He received his doctor of jurisprudence degree from the Columbia University School of Law in 1969. While at Columbia University, Targoff served as an editor for the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems and was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
Targoff began his professional career as a partner at the New York law firm Willkie Farr and Gallagher. In 1981, Targoff began his associations with Loral as Secretary of Loral Corporation and serving as the company’s general counsel. In 1992, Targoff was named Senior Vice President of Loral Corporation. In April of 1996, Targoff was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Loral Corporation, a position he held until 1998, at which time he left to form his own investment company, Michael B. Targoff & Co.
While an independent investor, Targoff assisted MHR Fund Management, founded by Mark Rachesky, in making its first investment in Loral. After this was accomplished, Targoff maintained an office in MHR’s New York offices in return for giving the company advice on investments.
Michael Targoff returned to Loral in 2006 when he was named Chief Executive Officer. As of 2008, Targoff has been named president of Loral.
Michael Targoff has served on a number of boards throughout his career. In addition to serving as vice president for the board of directors at Loral Space and Communications Inc., Targoff has also served as Chairman of the Board for CPI International, Inc., and is a director for ViaSat, Inc. and Leap Wireless International, Inc.
In 2008, MHR and the board of directors for Loral Space and Communications, Inc. were sued by the shareholders for breaches of fiduciary duties related to financing by MHR. During the time of the investigation, Michael Targoff served as CEO for Loral Space & Communications, Inc. He was also the vice-president of the board of directors.
